In its first period of history, between 1972-97, the club would have been easily able to field a complete side of players who appeared in first class rugby.
There were many more backs than forwards with Jonathan Callard (15), who played for Newport, Bath and ultimately, England and in so doing became the club's only capped player.
Callard would be the obvious choice at full back but Gary Moses (3), who appeared for Tredegar would be an able deputy. The club would be spoilt for choice in fielding a three-quarter line. Brothers, Clive (51) and Alan Jenkins (79) both appeared for Newport as did Roger Panting (350), who also played for the Wasps. Brian Hawkins (8) was a Newbridge regular for a number of seasons; Mark Sheady (26) had a couple of first team outings with Cheltenham with speedster, David Jones (1), having a season as Newport's wing. In addition Roger Davies (1) (Newport), Chris Manley (1) (Newbridge & Newport), Ron Lewis (4) (Cross Keys) and Tony Evans (7) (Newport) all made guest appearances for the club.
At Outside half Phil Llewellyn (4) and ex NHSOB, Bob Guilfoyle (2) both filled that birth for Newport with Clive Rogers (281) (Newbridge), Roger Clifford (3) (Newport), and Steve Phillips (7) (Newport) all duelling for the scrum half berth.
The pack selection is far easier with Jim Stokes (16) (Newport & Newbridge), Ray Lowe (2) (Newbridge), Barrie Webb () 13) (Newport) and John Blackwell (7) (Newport) the only choices in the front row. Martin Watkins(14)(Cross Keys)and Tony Mogridge(6) (Newport & Cardiff) resuming their Bedwas Youth partnership at lock which leaves Graham Pugh(8)(Bridgwater), Byron Faulkner(31)(Cross Keys & Newport), David Cain(9)(Newport), Chris Walden(15)(Newbridge & Abertillery), David Perks(24)(Leicestershire), Peter Rees(1)(Newport) and RhodGriffiths(2)(Glamorgan Wanderers) to compete for the back row spots.
